The collection consists of Jerome Handler's papers as a member of the Federal Steering Committee to advise the General Services Administration on The African Burial Ground of New York City. The collection contains agendas, blueprints, brochures, correspondence, memoranda, minutes, newsclippings, newsletters, photographs and slides, reports and working papers of the committee. Contents include tour briefing materials, 1992; the New York City Landmarks Preservation Committee Report, 1993; the research design for the investigation of the site prepared by John Milner Associates and Howard University; a classroom study guide and glossary, 1998; notes and correspondence on archaeological and anthropological issues; the Federal Steering Committee's recommendations report; and issues of "Update," a newsletter concerning the project. Of interest is testimony given by David N. Dinkins and others to a U.S. House Committee chaired by Gus Savage. Correspondents include Michael L. Blakey, Howard Dodson, Peggy King-Jorde, and Jennifer Royce.
